Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the capital of the island of Gran Canaria and of the province of Las Palmas, shares with Santa Cruz de Tenerife the capital of its Autonomous Region. The largest economic centre of the Canaries, and the seventh largest city in Spain, it is a live urban and cosmopolitan city with a population of almost 360.000.
The municipal boundaries, which begin in the northeastern side of the island of Gran Canaria, enjoy and offer its visitors one of the best climates of the world, die to various geographic and natural elements: its subtropical location, the effect of the water current of the Canaries, and the action of the Allyseus winds which, combined, soften the summer heat and sweeten the winters, giving a pleasant year-round climate.
A true winter is unknown in this land, and proofof this is the fact that its population complains of cold from the moment thermometres hit the 15º C mark.
(The publication in one of the issues of "Consumer Travel Publication" of the work of Thomas Whitmore "Index of the most pleasant climates", has caused the northamerican press (USA Today), to highlight Las Palmas de G.C. as the city with the best climate in the world.)
