The first mechanised transport service in our city was the tram, and substituted by electric engines later on.
The history of local buses( Guaguas) of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria began at the end of the 20s and early 30's. At the beginning, they circulated in a chaotic way; they used to compete among themselves and the trams; neither stops were established, nor tickets were given to the passengers.
In order to solve these problems in 1929 the Employer's Union of Jardineras Guaguas was created, becoming an Employer's Association in 1935. The term Jardinera(planter) stands for open air wicker bodywork.
In 1937, the Employer's Association signs a contract with the City Council offering a 24-hour service between the city of Las Palmas and the harbour with its 155 vehicles fleet. At the next day of signing this contract, the tram suspended its service. Guaguas had succeeded.
In 1939 they tried to municipalized transport service but this project never saw the light.
At first, the Employer's Association only offered its services to the low area of the city, but later on they will enlarge the routes to the upper area and suburbs.
The acquisition of German and Spanish vehicles helped the Company to a great technical advance, that users appreciated right well.
In 1979 the City Council municipalized the service, becoming the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria its owner.
In 1983 "Transportes Guanarteme Inc." was taken up, becoming Jardineras Guaguas the only company offering metropolitan transport.
In 1986 " Guaguas Municipales" was registered as a Public Limited Company, a new logo was adopted and the guaguas showed a new colour on their surfaces.
In July 1995 the new contract-program is signed between the Canarias Government, the City Council and Guaguas Municipales. This signed compromise meant 3,000 million pesetas subvention for the Gran Canarian company between 1995 and 1998.
The acquisition of articulated and low-floor guaguas - with the latest advances in security, comfort, and adapted to handicapped people -, new qualified staff and the enlargement of the lines net, have made Guaguas Municipales a modern company that has reached top scores in this country.
